Seedling Almond?
Question:I threw out the lefover nuts for the squirrels last Xmas and have found one almond has germinated and is now about 7cm tall. Can anyone tell me if I can grow it here in w yorks and will it eventually bare fruit?
Answers:
You are very lucky to have this almond kernel germinate in your garden. The tree originates from Mediterranean areas, but will grow in our cooler climes, though whether it will bear fruit or not is doubtful, spring blossom yes. What I would do, and I'm a bit of a bugger for anything unusual, is to carefully
remove the seedling, keeping as much soil around the roots as possible, and put in a 6 inch pot,in a good compost, John Innes No 3 is ideal, but to save money good garden soil with a bit of peat or potting compost. Keep out of hot sun and by early Autumn you will have a seedling about 10 ins high,(can't stand cm's). Now, choose your spot for its new home, try to retain a standard form, try to pick a sheltered spot, away from the cold N.E.winds, and in a couple of years time you can brag of your almond tree to your mates.
Good Luck
