I have a central air conditioner unit and when i turn it on the air that comes out of the vents stinks.?

Question:It smells so bad that i can't stand to have it on. Do you have any idea what could be the problem? Thanks

Answers:
something died in the system somewhere? have the vents cleaned and the unit serviced.

Maybe you need to have it cleaned out and/or replace the filters.
There is definitely a problem, you need to call in a professional service to clean your vent system. You should have your unit serviced each year before turning it on for the summer season.
It sounds like if you had something get into your vents. I would call and get your air ducts cleaned out and have your air conditioner looked at for possible problems. It is common to have your air ducts clogged up after a while and having to need them cleaned. well good luck..
Is it a mold/mildew smell?

Have you checked the filter? First things first.

Next, I would check the entire drainage line from your evaporator out. Wherever your blower is, probably at your furnace, there will be a drain line leading either outside, or, to a drain inside the house. This line should be unobstructed. In many installations one end of it is accessible, and it's a good idea to pour a cup of bleach through once a year.

Since these systems vary so much, if you can't find a pipe that allows the AC to drain the moisture from your home, and trace it backwards to find where it starts... you'll have to call somebody.
Good luck!
It could be a Dead mouse or something in your vents. I would suggest a Vent Cleaning. They have the ones where the stick a camera down your vents to see how they look. This may be your best bet cuz it'll be able to see a dead animal there.

OR if you don't change your filter or use cheap filters you could get a build up of dust on your A/C coils when it runs it gets wet. This can cause it to mold and mildew up and you get a bad smell. Have an A/C repair man come out and service it. you should be fine.

Good luck!
You may need to have a service person come out and clean your unit. Mold and other "nice" things start to grow in the units in the spring because of the rise in temp. and moisture. You can also clean or change your filter.
First off make sure your a/c unit filter is clean. Some houses have filters on the cold air returns too. Check your vents, especially those on the floor that something could have spilled into. Your can clean these yourself, but if it's deep in the duct work call a pro to have them cleaned. Clean and/or paint the room the unit is in. I experienced a musty odor that was coming from stagnate water in our hot water heater drain pan when I fixed that problem it stopped the musty smell problem. Good Luck
