Long Cold Snowy Winters - Advice?

Question:How do I adjust from living in Southern California my whole life to living in Rochester, NY where there are REAL seasons with long cold Winters? I know the obvious answers are: snow chains for the car, cold weather clothes/gear, and a shovel, but just how difficut is it? Can someone shed some light on the typical snowy day - from waking up in the morning to shoveling snow and keeping a home in general when it snows? Do people use salt on their walkways and have heaters in the garage?

Answers:
Funny, but I'm here at work (taking a break, obviously) and just browsing through questions and thought yours looked interesting since it's hot and sunny here today, I clicked on your question and I live in Rochester, New York!!

Winters here are hit and miss - some are very long and snowy and some really aren't too bad. Obviously, things will be very different than Southern California and that will take some getting used to. For me the hardest part is the lack of sunshine. The autumns here are really beautiful, but it seems once Halloween passes, the days become gloomier.

Also, it would depend on your living arrangement as to what preparations you need to make. Do you own your own home? If so, you will need to think about clearing the driveway - either hiring a plow driver or shoveling yourself. Do you have a husband or older children who can help? You don't need to shovel everyday - it won't snow all the time! I don't salt my property as it damages the cement/concrete. If you rent, your landlord may take care of snow and ice removal.

And even though we're pretty tough here, if the weather is really terrible, schools will close and employers are understanding that it takes you longer than usual to get to work.

Best of luck to you and welcome to Rochester!

it may not be healthy, but tanning helps me to get thru long winters.. also, lots of layers help to keep you warm.. yes, use salt on walkways, if you warm your car up in the morning, make sure you have the garage door open! maybe you can find a local boy to do the shoveling for you! good luck!
