Just bought mattress which is too hard - will it soften?

Question:I just bought a mattress for my son's bed. It was really expensive, as I chose the best quality one in the shop. I didn't realise until it arrived that it is really very firm. It's good quality, but just really firm, with hardly any 'give' to it at all. It's like lying on the ground, practically!

The guy at the shop says it will soften with time, but I doubt this personally. He's not obliged to refund me, because I chose it. What should I do? It cost a lot of money, and I'm not happy with it.

Answers:
NO. Will not soften. The store should work with you without you having to go upper levels of management. If still would like a bit softer, add a foam pad on top.

It wont' soften. The sales person should have let you test out the firmness types before you bought it. I would try to exchange it for a less firm model. It will not soften over time. It may wear some. But definately not soften. You can put egg crate foam or a pillow topper on top and it will soften the surface. It will still be firm undearneath. But the topper will help make it more comfortable.
If it softens over time, then it's not as good a quality as you think it is. A mattress should retain it's general firmness for years. Are you sure you can't exchange it?
You are smart to know when you are being mislead. If it is good quality, it is not going to get softer. Call him back and tell him, you need to exchange it for another mattress. (It might work! And if he refuses, you haven't lost anything!) You can buy a memory foam topper to lay on it. That will make it usable anyway! The money is spent, if you don't want to spend more money fixing it. Tell your son to get a baseball bat and soften it up. It won't hurt the mattress, and it just might soften it up, at least your son will have some fun.
it will not soften, at least not until your son's kids graduate highschool ;)

if it's too hard for him, have it changed, and dont put too much trust in the store guy.
Very firm. It'll stay that way. ~
Go back to the store that you bought it from, and ask to speak to the store manager. When you talk to him, tell him what that guy said.
Some consumers actually prefer to purchase a very firm mattress, because they usually cost less than a pillowtop, then add their own 3" topper . . talalay latex with a wool fleece pad, or memory foam.

It,s my fault really, I did,nt test it .
So live and learn !
Next time hurry or not test it before you plunk down the hard earned cash !!
By the way I hope they work with you on not only getting you,r son the right bed , but also getting the money right too .
IF IT IS A FIRM MATTRESS THAT IS HOW IT WILL STAY IF IT IS A GOOD EXPENSIVE ONE, THEY MIGHT LET YOU EXCHANGE IT BUT CHANCES ARE THEY WONT...GOOD LUCK
