Can I use chunks of cedar mulch as smoking wood in my grill?

Question:I bought a few bags of cedar mulch that had bigger than necessary pieces of wood. Can I soak these and use them to add smoke flavor to my grilled food? They do not seem to be treated with anything.

Answers:
That might not be a good idea. Some mulches are treated with chemicals to keep weeds from growing.

I wouldnt advise it myself!
It s not meant for that!
call wherever you got the mulch from!
ya it will add flavor
some mulches have chemicals in them so u might not want to do that.. it actually doesnt matter what kind of wood u use for under 6 hours of cooking but over 6 hours u should choose what kind of wood smoke has the best taste. (which smoke from the wood has the best taste. i.e. redwood- smokey flavor) so it really depends on what kind of flavor u like. if youre concerned about this ask at where u bought ur grill or where u r buying the mulch
Only if you want to ruin the meat.
i wouldnt use cedar no matter what...
Yes, you can. No problem. Treatment will be burned out. The only question I have is why would you want to eat meat that tastes like cedar?
Most are previously treated and cedar burns rather fast and has an aroma of its own. If you wish to use a wood for grilling, try OAK. Don't use the chips as they will not burn long enough to product the oak flavor. Larger chunk's work well after soaking them for some time.
