What permit(s) do I need to build a roof over a private riding arena in unincorporated Harris County?
Question:Do I even need a permint? The riding arena sits towards the back of a 7 acre private property. The roof structure will be 17-20 ft high, made of steel pipe and aluminum sheeting. I cannot find a human at the Harris Co engineering office to ask what kind of permit and supporting documentation I need - I just get the run-around on an automated answering service.

You probably don't need a permit but before I put out any money I would go to the County Commissioner's office and ask just to make sure. I hate those automated phones too. If you go in person they will guide you to the right person. You don't want to get it half built and have some building inspector from the county come by and stop you. Sounds like a great project.
I would advise a call to the Planning/Zoning Office in Harris Co. Tell them you are thinking of building a roof over the arena and need to know if you are required to get a permit. You could also check online to find out the zoning restrictions for building heights in your area, but the call would be sooo much quicker and easier.
Try hiting 0 every time they ask you to make selection sometimes that will get you a real person
Seems automation has dispensed with humans in the County! Why not complain to your Sheriff!
