HELP! Wet house! How to dry it out?

Question:My older house is super humid. Shag carpets, shaggy wooden paneled basement walls, no central air.

Once again the shag feels wet and worried about the condition messing up the walls.. making an environment for mold..etc.

NOTHING will dry quickly if I leave it out esp. the carpets. How to remedy? If I peeled up all the carpet would the wood and concrete floors just becmoe slippery?

Answers:
Trying a dehumidifier might work for you.
You can get one at stores like Sears or Lowes.
I have used one for as long as I can recall in a large finished basement which gets damp any time.
I don't know what size space you have but I am sure you might be able to find one to fit your needs.
Take a look at the link I included to give you an idea of what capacity you might need.
Good luck.

towels or use a big blow drier
yeah, plug in fans all around the mess and put them on high.

it will work, thats what i use.
You really need to get some central AC. Sry, there is no other choice. If you dry it up it will all come back again.

hope this helps.
Lots of fans blowing air, as many as you can find.
Turn on all the fans in the house and open all the doors and windows. you might want to consider getting central air. Do you have a window unit?
If you have a water damaged area, you need to call in a professional. Even if it “feels dry” to you, it can still be damp enough to allow mold to continue to grow.

Every day you wait, more mold spores germinate and the moisture continues to spread throughout the house.

I did water remediation for years (I don’t now), and I saw many times a job that should have been a couple hundred turn into tens of thousands because the water was allowed to saturate the walls, etc.

There is a reason mold has caused million dollar lawsuits and been the reason for whole houses being condemned – it can be a serous health problem.

Please, catch it early, and don’t mess around with this, for the sake of both your health and your checkbook!

You will find adds in coupon books, Google, and yellow pages for water restoration companies, or call your insurance company to inform you of the company they use.
If you can't afford central air pick up a couple of de-humidifiers. They are perfect to get rid of unwanted moisture. There must be an underlying reason for the moisture problem other than age and panelling.
industrial fan would give more air and forces then any fan you can get from the store-hardware store would have them
okay lets go step by step-humid can be cut by open a window and putting in air condition.
get raid of the shaggy rugs/carpet. and put in tiles or flooring.
There is a place where they will re do your basement to look like another room -if you call them I should they can give you ideas-since I have no ideal where you live I cannot give you a phone number to this type of place they should be in your yellow pages.

okay this there water laying on your floor now-no then it would be easy to use the fan that I told you earlier then put in a new flooring and your room-basement should be fine.

you should also get your basement sealed-which can be done by a contractor-it is put on your walls inside and the walls outside your basement creating a barrier so that water and other things can not get into your basement.
You do have a problem. Firstly, your floors are wet and being in the basement, you should have a mold remediator come in and should evaluate the situation, as they will come in and free estimate. If you do call, check if they do give free estimates. But I know you are going to need a dehumidifier. But the wetness is going to need attention. I even called the Board of Health in to check my situation. All is well now. So i hope I have helped by advising you. good luck bettyk
