My small 5000 gallon above ground pool is cloudy what should I put in it?

What color is the cloudiness? If it's white cloudy and you haven't added anything to the pool or you were swimming in it yesterday then it needs to be shocked. Put in 1/2 gallon of liquid household bleach (non-scented) and let it circulate (assuming you have a filtration pump on there). If you don't have a pump then stir the pool water and add the bleach, then stir it every 20 minutes or so for an hour or two.
If it's green cloudy then you have the start of an algae bloom and you need to get more bleach in there than above. Put a full gallon and a half in and repeat the mixing process if you don't have a filter.
Do you have a test kit? If so, what are the readings on the pool? Specifically I'm looking for total alkalinity, pH, total chlorine, free chlorine, and calcium hardness.

Take a sample to you nearest Pool Store and they will tell you what you need. Do it all the time ...

I nave just bought a small above ground pool also, purchased a chemical kit HTH above ground pool Start up and Maintenance Kit includes shock treatment, chlorine , stabilizer and test strips, bought it from ACE hardware. According to the instructions with this kit your Pool most likely needs a shock treatment, that is what they recommend for cloudy water, but you should test water conditions before adding any chemicals
