What is your *best* organizing tip?

Question:I'm moving from my "fresh out of college" apartment in the city to my "more grown-up" apartment in the suburbs in a few weeks. Right now I'm going through the process of throwing stuff out. I want to start off living at my new place with a bang, and being organized is something I wish I was better at! Any idea helps, especially the inexpensive ones, as I am on a tight budget! Thanks! :)

Answers:
If you don't already have one, get a filing cabinet. They are a MUST HAVE for keeping paperwork organized. You can pick one up at your local thrift store, or used furniture store.

Invest in a paper shredder and have it handy when you open your mail. Shred what you can. Use baskets to hold necessary paperwork until it can be filed away. Put photos in albums.Find a "home" for all your things so you know where to find them when needed (a drawer for tools, a shelf for books, etc).

Take advantage of the space under your bed to store sweaters, blankets, luggage, etc. Install a second rod in your closet for more hanging space. Keep clutter to a minimum and your house will stay cleaner, easier!

Color code everything. Very simple, inexpensive and it works!
Get some plastic tubs from the dollar store. It is easier to keep stuff organized when things are put into containers. Plus you can stack them to save space.
This is the BEST ADVICE I have ever followed and will now pass on, and I have my grandmother to thank for it:

After you're through using something, put it back where you got it. (It's pretty much "everything has a place and everything in its place.")

Seriously, doing that will save you from ever having to utter the phrase, "Now where the hell did I put that?"

Trust me. And trust my grandmother.
Don't use it, lose it! It is really surprising how much stuff we have that we don't use!

Never leave a room empty handed! When you get up to go into the kitchen, bring anything with you that needs to go there, same with every room.

Keep like things together! There is no bigger frustration knowing you have something and can't find it. Keep all the desk items together, all cooking utensils together, all cleaning products together, etc!

Have fun in your new home!
