How have building codes in Texas changed over the past years? Are new houses better built than old ones?

Question:How much safer and more energy efficient are new houses in Texas than old houses? What year(s) did the more stringent building codes go into effect?

Thanks!

Answers:
I dont know what year the building codes changed but I can tell you that I have lived in a home built in the 1920s and 1970s and now reside in a home built 2 yrs ago. The home from the 1920s and the house from the 70s were only 300 sq feet difference (2500 sq ft for 1970s) and my current home built 2 yrs ago is 3500 sq ft and it costs me 40% less to heat and cool my home then it did the house from the 1970s. If you have a choice go with a younger home unless the older home has been remodeled with new windows and insulation.

You will find that the codes change year to year I am in new home construction and am dealing with a change this week
