I have a wasp question and I hope someone can help!?
Question:There seems to be large, orange/reddish wasps living in the ground in front of my house. They are not mud wasps but I have no idea what they are. When I walk passed the holes the insects have made in the dirt, they come out of their individual hole and start to attack. I have never been stung but they make it tough to enter and exit my house. I tried spray but because they are underground, it doesn't seem to kill them. What are they? Are they dangerous? Do I need to get rid of them?
Answers:
Wasps generally are not dangerous unless you are allergic. They are really mean though and they will attack. If you go to Walmart, you will find Wasp killer, it is a spray that you spray in the hole and it foams up really fast and goes into the nest and kill every single wasp that is in the nest. It is best to do it towards dusk, because that is when they go to sleep and won't be as active. The best thing to do is to just go up to the hole and start spraying. Once you start spraying it will foam up so fast that the wasps won't even have time to come out. It is actually very easy to do, just make sure that if you have animals they don't get into it. By the time you wake up the next day, it will look like an abandoned city and you can even pick up the nest and toss it.
Hope you can get rid of them and no one gets stung!
It's not uncommon for wasps to nest in the ground. An exterminator can probably get rid of them for you. Wasps can be aggressive, and with up to 200 in a hive that could be trouble if you need to frequently pass close by.
I'd try to block the entrance to their nest somehow.
Or pour some gas in there.
If you try it, make sure your skins covered :x
Flood them out.or put flying insect spray right in the hole and run like heck...
Cook some boiling water, with Cayenne pepper in it. Pour it into the holes. Do this at night, when it is very dark (no moon). Wasps can not fly at night.
My company just started offering a device to spray wasps at a safe distance - it is called The Spray Close TM Spray Extender. It is available at Meijer and The Andersons in the Mid-West. It is also on e-bay.
Let's you get a can right up close without being there yourself.
