baby powder, flour, any kind of talcum powder. just sprinkle it around the area where they come in. boric acid works the best but if you have children or pets it will make them sick.
to get rid of the ants completely take:
1/4 tsp boric acid
1 tsp grape jelly
1/2 tsp wet cat food
roll it into tiny balls and place them where you see the ants the most. they think this is a special treat and they take it back to the queen who eats it and dies.
boric acid its a powder and i use it to put in the cracks everywhere around where they may come baseboards etc and when i did that i have not seen then in that particular spot anymore, so try it. worked for me!
you can bury moth balls around the primeter. ants (and many other insects) don't like to cross that line.

after you can use boric acid to prevent them from coming but a good rule is to get rid of your garbage on a daily basis and make sure any sugary products in good tight container. Living in Florida it is well known that ants will travel for up to 2 miles for just a candy left on a side table. I've seen it to many times. Good Luck!
