Use well seasoned wood. The more seasoned a hardwood is, the less smoke there will be.
Dont use pine, as its a soft wood and subject to much smoke.
Organics will tend to smoke, when put on a fire.
Paper will also smoke, so, use limited amount of this. Dont burn carbon, such as coal or charcoal, as it smokes a great deal, and is a dirty smoke!

Don't light the flame
If you are avoiding smoke, then don't burn anything specially garden refuse. To control smoke, put off the flame by throwing water unto it.
