How do you get grass to grow under pine trees?
Question:
Answers:
Hi I have tall pines here in SW, anything growing under pines has to like pine needles. Or do as we are doing today, raking up the layer of "needles and dirt" pine cones, etc, just go about an 1" or so. If you can afford it rent or borrow a rototiller get someone to till, then go get some cedar or fibrous mulch. Do NOT buy red bark, it looks nice, however, has dye and will leach into the ground, bad for trees! If weedy now it will be again! so get inexpensive weed barrier fabric at H. Depot after tilling and raking put this down on smooth surface. If no or few weeds grow (too acidic), go ahead and rake needles, old dirt as above, smooth, apply 2" of nice fibruous bark adding a "bed" or little berm if you wish of good garden soil around the tree in a ring. Plant perennial or annual Pansies (they like the cool and appreciate shade, some are very hardy and take snow!), Hosta which have amazing huge variegated leaves and are perennials, Plantain Lily etc. Many ground covers like shade as well. Ferns look very woodsy, can add texture with the smaller ground covers for shade and the larger leafed Hostas. Your local garden center would be a good stop, pick up Shade Loving plants and buy those appealing to you. Fresh dirt in the ring and no pine needles, will need to replenish yearly as pine cones and needles do drop! Also, If any area faces south or west get some sun loving flowers and plant varying sun to shade plants as you go around tree. One nice big rock with color (pinks, grays, etc) looks pretty placed just "so", add Hosta or Ferns whose leaves can shade or overlap the rock looking natural like it was "always there" and would be a bit different, you could either use bark or decorative gravel around base of tree (not too deep but does help tree retain moisture, roots can get air with bark and light rock application), you might try Shade Grass if no dogs rooting about, a ring of that looks very green and delicate like a fairy ring and then bark beyond that, around into a path joining other trees? set out a wood or iron bench. Sit down in the early morn or at twilight, wait for a breeze and a leprechaun. I know I will. Good luck, enjoy whatever choices you make!
cut the limbs up about six to eight feet , rake all needles away, put down fresh top soil and hope for the best. Under pine trees is a difficult place to grow grass
