Why do flying ants fly up from ant hills out of nowere?

Question:this afternoon around 1 thousands of flying ants flew out of ant hills in my backyard. we didnt provoke them or anything they just flew out.

Answers:
They are swarmers. What is going on is that their colony is getting too large so these ants are looking to mate and start their own colony. If they were coming out of a mound in the middle of the yard, it is most likely that they are not wood destroying. Good luck.

It is the migration and mating season. Many of these ants are the type that eat wood, so make sure that you keep them away from your house.
