I have seen a show on "PBS" and since I am pretty particular on using more natural items vs. chemicals this is what the show said:
Get a whole garlic clove, (fresh) and boil it in water: Using 1QT/946ml of water.
Bring the water to a boil and after the water has cooled to room temp. Spray on the area where the squirrels/deer/etc. are invading.
It also is a benefit for the growth of flowers/ plants.
A good friend of mine has already done this and she says it has worked as she has these creatures in her flower beds as well.
You might try giving them their own treat like dried corn on the cob. It works with bird feeders in winter.
