Why is my squash retarted?

Question:I am growing squash.... well, actually zucchini. And most of it is growing great but I get an occasional squash that starts to grow and ends up short and fat and soft/ rotten on the end. Why?

Answers:
Learning to spell retard is like learning to spell porch monkey. Its a mean word.

Your vegetable may be sitting on the gound. Fungus is a possibility. Try googling growing zucchini. If its only the occassional veg, I wouldn't do anything chemical. It could screw up the predator balance in your garden and give you big time bug problems. Garden on!

because retarded is spelled with D not T
Bugs maybe.
It's amazing that more of your squash isn't mutated... with all the hy-brid seeds out there. Nothing is pure anymore.

I don't know why it's retarded, but I wouldn't worry about it. Compost it and use that as fertilizer.
because it splles bedder dan yoo. tee hee heeeeeee! just kidding.

but to slightly expand on what -Be still and know He...- says, it might be that some bugs got into the "supply line" and cut off the flow of water.

by the way your squash is disabled, not retarded.
All it takes is for one insect to bit into the end of a new growth and it will unfortunately rot.
Some varieties of squash need to be suspended to grow correctly. They are climbing vines, ideally. You can use a tomato cage or something similar to hang the plants on so they dangle in the air and can grow unrestricted. This also helps keep them from getting rotten by sitting on the damp ground.
