Answers:
I start my tomatoes early in the spring here in zone 5. I put the seeds in a growing medium from Walmarts, and start them in a tray with 36 sections, it usually comes with a plastic lid, but you can use clear plastic wrap to keep the seeds moist until they sprout. Keep the tray in a warm place, I used the gas oven pilot light to keep the tray warm-but I always put a warning on the oven door so that the oven wasn't accidently turned on with the tray inside!
Once the seeds sprout, take the plastic off. Let the sprouts grow a day or two, then gently tweak them out of the soil, dig a deeper hole with the tip of a pencil, and put the sprout back in. I do this about once a week for several weeks. When the first true leaves appear, I nip off the two sprout leaves.
All of this makes for a stronger tomato plant with better roots. If you don't transplant your started tomatoes a few times they end up with weak, leggy stems that are easily damaged and a shallow root system.
Set them out in a sheltered place when danger of frost is past and let them "harden". Usually, early to middle May is a good time to put in tomatoes in the Midwest.
The tomatoes I started in March are about 2 feet tall right now and covered with blooms. We should have tomatoes by the end of July.
You can plant potted tomatoes, but they are expensive and sometimes don't do as well as home-started tomatoes.
I really enjoy starting my own plants and I use heirloom (nonhybrid) varieties so I can save my own seed.
Try Amish Brandywine heirloom tomatoes, they are great! The tomatoes can grow up to 1 to 2 pounds, huge! And tasty.
When you put your started plants in the garden, plant them with a small collar (about 2-3 inches tall) make from a cardboard paper towel or toilet paper roll. This keeps birds and cutworms from nipping your plant stem.
Good luck.
no, you can go to a gardening shop, and buy the tomato seeds. Its a little bit late in the year to start the plants now, as they die in autumn, but you could get the seeds and compost ready for next year.

you can buy started plants
You can start them from seed if you like, you can also buy small plants. I prefer to buy small plants from my local garden store -- never a wal mart! They should be planted in about the middle of May, depending on where you live.
I have never tried to bury a tomato, but I have had plants start up in the spring where tomatoes were planted the year before. I guess it's worth trying! Make sure that the tomato you bury is not a hybrid variety though. Hybrids are not always "true to seed", which basically means the seed you plant may not be the plant you get.
