I need help with a Singer #237 sewing machine?
Question:This machine has been donated, but has been sitting in a shed for awhile. It runs fine, except the presser foot mechanism does not work. I have tried oiling, cleaning, but it wont budge from up position. If you have any ideas that would help, and if you know exactly how the mechanism works, that would also be helpful.
Answers:
there are places that fix and oil sewing machines. Look it up in your yellow pages and give them a call. If not then call a fabric shop and ask them where you can get your sewing machine repaired. Have that shop oil it properly (it would need "light" oil). Sounds like rust to me. The person who fixes it can get it unstuck for you and working like new again.
Check with a local sewing machine repairman, he can probably get you a replacement foot presser or adapt one to fit your machine.
buy a new one
You should takapart the upper part. We use 50 professional singers and thy work fine since 1969. The upper part contains the movement mechanism. Maybe its just soooo rusty that it wont work anymore. In that case, remove the moving mechanism and make it bath in an anti-rust solution for the night or whatever written on the box. With these machines...there is just one thing that works: try something new every time they dont work...and try it again and again. They are not that complicated. Good Luck!
take it apart to clean it, sounds like it could have rusted or call your local singer repair store and ask them.
