How do you get rid of cockroaches in your kitchen?
Question:In our kitchen, whenever we get up & get some coffee for the morning, I find lots of cockroaches, little ones as well as big ones running around, getting into the microwaves, every possible spots they can find. How do I get rid of them?
This only happens when we go to sleep, the house's in complete silence & they start coming out. What's the best spray to use? Is there something that's non-toxic or any home remedies?
Answers:
We just sprinkled some boric acid around the cracks and crevices and they were all gone in about a week. Plus it keeps on killing .
i used my hi powered shop vac,,,super suck and then dumped em in a bonfire..ah! roasted roaches and lager beer. can it get anybetter?..seriously the vac works, as does the fire...hate those little buggers
Try bombing the house. U have to clean everything good and dont leave any food left out . they can live on a grain of sugar. u might have to bomb a couple of times if that doesn't work call exterminator.
Dry out the sink when you're done and any other wet areas. If you take away their water source, they'll need it somewhere, and hopefully get it outside.
If you have a leaky faucet, get it fixed.
Try covering all food in airtight containers. At least until the roach problem is clear.
Clean your floors and counters with a mild bleach solution. I believe it repels roaches.
Clean off any crumbs, spills, and other foodstuff off floors, counters, inside cabinets, drip pans, and microwave immediately. Don't wait overnight to clean up after cooking.
This will deal with the problem at its source. Good luck.
First clean EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE. Next, pullout the refrigerator/dishwasher, open your cabinets and inspect for points of entry (like around pipes and electrical outlets). Seal said places so the roaches can't just walk in. Replace your toaster (don't think about, don't open it, just do it). I hate pesticides of any kind but, here I'd use them. Spray, bug bomb, put down "roach motels" and last but not least, pour a gallon of chlorine bleach down each of your drains including the floor drain in the basement. (this is where your big ones are probably coming from). Expect this little war to go on for a week, remembering that your best defense is to keep everything clean and sealed.
Cochroaches [or roaches] are very difficult to eliminate but the following methods can allow you to control them and possibly eliminate them:-
Firstly, deny them access to food as much as possible. This means keeping the kitchen as clean as you can by sweeping up crumbs etc and washing surfaces where foodstuff may be spilled.
To kill as many cochroaches as you can you can, put all food away in closed containers or in refrigerators to protect the food. Then use a pyrethrum based insecticide or a synthetic pyrethrum to spray all cracks and crevices, behind water heaters, under stoves and refrigerators, and any recesses such as modern tap handles. These sprays are called "knockdown" insecticides, are short lived, and only kill insects that they come in contact with at the time of spraying.
Similarly, you could use a "bomb" that does the same thing as a spray except that it gets into nearly all cracks and crevices etc. In this instance you may need to remove all food from the kitchen, open doors to cupboards, and seal the kitchen as best as you can, leaving one door open to enable you to exit after setting the "bomb". This door needs to be closed and sealed when you exit. CARE NEEDS TO BE EXERCISED WHEN USING "BOMBS" as they can often generate a lot of heat that could cause a fire. Often it is best to place a "bomb" in a metal can on top of a brick to minimize the risk of fires. Always follow the manufacturers instructions.
Cockroaches are nocturnal by nature and this is why you see them mainly at night. They like warm conditions and this is why you will find them behind water heaters where they often hide during daylight hours.
When you spray with a pyrethrum spray [or synthetic pyrethrum] the cockroaches will come out from hiding and run around madly until they eventually drop dead. I have noted at least 20 cockroaches emerge from the recessed back of a modern tap handle when the area was sprayed.
You may kill all of the cockroaches that are present in your kitchen but the kitchen may soon be reinfested. This is because cockroaches lay eggs in a protective sack that is deposited in areas that they hide. You may have noticed some female roaches with such a sack protruding from their backside before they deposit it in a "safe" place. The protected eggs are not affected by the knockdown spray and will hatch out later and the problem will resume.
To counter this you can use a residual spray [or creepies/crawlies spray] around skirting boards, on walls behind heaters, and other out-of- the-way places. Then when the young cockroaches traverse this band of insecticide they will take some up and eventually die. This is slower acting than the knockdown spray and yo may see some roaches running around during the day when they become poisoned.
It may be a good idea to clean out all cupboards and spray around them with a residual spray and allow some time before replacing the foodstuffs.
Be careful when you bring anything into the kitchen to prevent re-infestation. For example you may find roaches hidden under the flaps of cartons.
It is mainly the small "German" and "Oriental" roaches that live inside. The larger, "American" roaches mainly inhabit sewers and septic tanks, but they will come inside. The smaller roaches are the most difficult to control and, in hot climates, will flu from place to place. The larger roaches can also fly but seldom do so.
To prevent the roaches from entering the house, apply a band of residual insecticide around doors and window openings, and any other openings such as vents.
Make sure that you ALWAYS protect yourself and others from harm by following the manufacturers instructions when using insecticides. Good luck with your endevours.
Roach Pruf. You can get it at your local store. It is mainly borac acid and works great. Does not take long either.
