Will my everbearing strawberries i planted mid may have strawberries this year? Im in chicago.?
Question:They just started putting out runners that are makin new plants.,
Answers:
Cut the runners off. It will make the plant grow more berries. I've already ate two off my plant that I planted in late April (in KC) Here's the article that got me on track. Use a hanging pot!!
FRUIT
Summer Care of Strawberries
The care you give your strawberries this summer and fall will make a
difference in the amount of fruit you harvest next spring. Next year's
fruit buds will be set in September and October of this year. Larger,
healthier plants set more fruit buds.
If you use a garden cultivator, a rototiller, or a hoe for weed
control
in the rows and between rows, throw about a half inch of soil over the
crowns. Strawberry plant crowns continue to develop at the top, and new
roots are initiated above old roots on the crown, so about a half inch
to an inch of soil should cover the crown. You will provide a good
rooting medium for new runner plants if you keep the soil pliable or
resilient rather than allowing it to become hard on the surface.
If you need to maximize production from a small garden spot, hand set
the runner plants so that there is about 6 inches between all strawberry
plants in the row. This will insure that each plant has all the water,
nutrients and sunlight it needs to maximize production. Runner plants
can be held in place by hairpins. Once you have enough runner plants to
fill the row, all additional ones can be removed because they will only
act as weeds if allowed to develop.
Don't forget to keep moisture in the soil. Strawberry plants need
about
1 1/2 inches of moisture each week when temperatures reach 90 degrees. (WU)
I planted some around that time last year, and I got very few berries that season. However, without even cutting the runners, I have gotten dozens this year. So be patient...it usually takes a season for the plant to get established. Then let the feasting begin! :)
