Can orchids be planted outside? Will they return yearly or are they just for one year?
Question:I knwo nothing about gardening and these are my mother's favorite plants. She has a great garden and I'd like to ger her a bunch of orchids for mother's day. Will they come back every year? Will they survive an outdoor summer in maine?

There are some hardy orchids that will withstand low temps. Additionaly, say your looking for orchids in your garden rather than a container you could look for hardy terreterial orchids, do a google search and you'll find some.

If you live in a humid part of the country, it may work. But they need portection from temperature extremes. Dry heat, and cold, are about the worst things for orchids. Bright direct sun can burn the leaves. It has burned leaves on mine on eastern windows indoors.
There is some variation in the light orchids need, but in general it is bright but not direct.
North or south windows have worked best for me, where I have had orchids bloom for 5-6 months continuously.
Orchids do best in bright (but indirect ) light and they like humidity. (They grow on tree bark in Hawaii!) An outdoor summer in Maine might be risky. Either a bright spot on a porch which does not receive direct sunlight, or indoors is best. I would recommend potting the orchids (use orchid bark, not soil) in nice glazed pots and give them to her for Mother's Day. They will bring her years of enjoyment.
