Question:why should I get a downdraft range as opposed to a above the stove range? what are the biggest benefits?

I am not sure but I think you are comparing the ventilation systems not the stoves themselves if so, the two types are used in different applications the above the stove system is only used in an against the wall installation wereas the downdraft type is used on an island away from any walls
