If the cigarette smell is through out a room or apartment, the first thing you've got to do is:
1. wash or get rid of the window treatment. cigarette smell will cling like mad to fabric. (You could try taking them down, putting them in the dryer with fabric sheets, too)
2. get the carpets cleaned, tell the guy that does it you especially want to get rid of the cigarette smell. (If you rent an apartment, complain to the "super" maybe they'll pay for the carpets to be cleaned.
3. Is the smell in the sofa and other cloth furniture? Try spraying Febreeze on them, let the Febreeze dry before you sit on them. This really helps.
4. Wash the windows cause cigarette smell will leave a "yellowish" residue on all surfaces... so wash the walls, too.
5. We had a tenant that smoked and we had to throw the drapes out, wash and paint all the walls and put in new carpeting.
Sorry this is a lot of work, but that cigarette smell gets into every crack and crevice and is hard to get rid of. Candles and deodorizers just cover it up for a short time.

Mix 1 cup of warm water, add 2 tablespoons of borax, mix well until dissolved, then add 1 cup of vinegar. Put this mixture in a heavy duty plastic spray bottle and spray on carpets and furniture. This solution will eradicate the cigarette smoke odor, but you must use it daily for a least a month. Clean or replace your heat/cool filter weekly, and place small bowls of vinegar in every room to absorb odors. It takes awhile to rid a house of cigarette smell. This method does not just cover up the odor, it removes it permanently.

gonna have to do that deep spring cleaning. have all carpets shampoed.. wash all curtians.. have all furniture steamed cleaned.. wash all walls from top to bottom.. wash all light fixtures and all fans and change any air filters that you have ...
wash down all the hard surfaces with vinigar/water mixture. Clean any soft surfaces (carpet, couches, etc.) then rent or buy an Ozone generator. Ebay is good for them. This is what a lot of the pros use. Run it while nobody is present (harmful to be present while using it and for 1 hour after use). If it can remove the smell after a fire, it can handle some cig smell. Remember though, you have to get rid of the source of the smell before you get rid of the smell, otherwise you are just wasting your time.
