Funky indoor plants?
Question:I want to grow some funky indoor plants for my classroom - ones that look unusual. I saw some in a store that looked like they had the base of a coconut and some that had what looked like sweet potato bases. (They were quite spendy, though.) Can you plant fruits and veggies and watch them grow? Any other "fun" ideas. My class always enjoys checking out my plants, but I want something different than phillies and ferns!!

"air plants" are a type of Bromiliad that are cool, they dont grow in soil, you have to mist them.
ohhhhhh
Try Peperomia argyreia. It's a very interesting-looking plant with heart shaped leaves which are striped like a watermelon. The green and white stripes and the red stems are a great contrast.
Inexpensive and easy to look after.

You can plant an avocado pit, I think. We tried it with toothpicks supporting it on both sides across the rim of a glass filled with water so that the lower half of the pit was submerged. It should sprout roots and then you plant it in dirt and watch what happens. My mom brought back lemon seeds from a trip to Mexico and she has a huge lemon tree in her house that has nice sized lemons growing on it after about five years or so! Have fun.
