My water turned yellow all of the sudden out of all my faucets. What should I do?
Question:My house was built in 1960 and I think has some iron pipes. The water is now yellowish-brown. Is this a hazard? Do I need new pipes. How expensive could this be?
Answers:
Check with your city or county water authority. Sometimes they flush the pipes. (They usually notify the community.) If they have no knowledge of this, you need to call a plumber and possibly an environmental expert to test the water for contamination. Also check with your neighbors to see if they have similar problems. In the meantime, you should not drink the water.
call a plumber
call the city and have them come out and flush (what ever it is they flushed when that happend to me) call the water company better yet
Our house was built in 1963. We had the same thing occur to our plumbing system on numerous occasions. Our sewer system backed up because a tree root grew into the pipes underneath our home. We called a local plumber who came out and "snaked" the pipes and cleared everything out. He pulled out hair, sticks, leaves, and a bunch of other "who knows what". We still need the process done about once a year.
You should have your water tested first!
yes it is a hazard and if you need your pipes replace your looking at 10,000 plus. but it coould also be somthing in your heater since water runs throuhg there.
When the water softener runs out of salt at my house, the water turns brownish yellow because of the iron in our water (we have well-water). This isnt dangerous, but more of an annoyance.
Do you have your own well? May be some problems with what is going back into the well. Sometimes a house with iron pipes and be cleaned up simply by turning on the water and letting it run for several days.
They were probably working on the water lines, or still are. If a water main breaks you get a lot of crap in the water
Just let the taps run until clear( they may still be working on the line)
Don't start worrying about changing the pipes unless you find out that they are lead. There is gov. help (financial) for replacing lead pipes etc. in your house.
sounds like you got an open well, tell your kids its not a potty. just joking, pvc aka plastic pipes are cheap & easy 2 repair. the age of polymers is as good as copper.
Your sewage line backed up into your freshwater trap...Flush your lines by turning on water at all facuets. I`d snake out your main sewage line as well.
