Loud Swimming Pool Filter Noise?
Question:We have an older pool, somewhere around 15 and 16 years old and the filter/motor are just as old. The filter has ran great for the entire time we've had the pool, but this year the motor powering it sounds much louder. It's a noise that sounds like a broken desktop computer fan and can be heard 3 houses down.
The amount of output and suction by the filter seems to be stronger this year as well. Any suggestions as to how to get rid of that noise?
Answers:
If it is a loud screeching noise, it's probably the bearings in the motor. With the age of the equipment, it's probably best to look at replacing the pump (or only the motor if you're familiar with doing it, or have the time to have someone do it...)
It sounds like the motor bearings are wearing out. The best thing to do is to disconnect it and take it to your local pool supply and service shop. If you're also getting more suction, then there may also be a hole in a screen somewhere in the system, which could have resulted in damage to the motor.
