Minimise noise from busy road at bottom of guarden?

Question:My house backs on to quite a busy road, I need ideas to cut out noise and make fensing more attractive, I have some shrubs and trees. I need this to be done in shortest time possible.

Answers:
go into your local garden centre and ask for their fastest growing conifers. they grow very dense if you keep cutting the tops, can't remember the name of them

build a high fence, put in double glazing.
i agree with donn s large trees and high ones at that. thats what i have and it does reduce noise.
Probably the fastest growing screening plant is bamboo, but since your question makes me think you are in the UK, I don't know if your climate will support it. Probably the suggestion to check with a local garden center is best.
Approach your local council - this is exactly the sort of thing that they should deal with. They will certainly have dealt with noise pollution problems before and will have the best advice. They may also give you some financial help towards planting conifers or getting double-glazing.
plant fir trees the fast growing ones are called leyland or somethink similar
They're all good answers but how long will it take for the council to change things. The best idea has already been said.
