How can I keep the upstairs to an apartment the coolest temperature possible?
Question:I live in a townhome that faces the north and we can't seem to keep the upstairs at a decent temperature, even with the AC on and the downstairs vents closed. Has anyone perfected the art of cooling the 2nd floor, and if so what is the trick?
Answers:
You need air circulation. Crack open an upstair window so the heat can escape, close the upstair vents and open the downstair vents. This will force the air to follow a path and cool the upstairs.
Keep the AC fan running - it will keep the air circulating. Also - installing a ceiling fan will help immensely!
It can also hep if you install light/sun blocking drapes or shades upstairs.
Good insulation and window treatments (best way separate cooling/heating unit for each floor) Hot air rises nothing changes that, so you have to work on insulation from the elements, and limiting heat from entering.
Just remember heat rises. IT cost me a fortune to cool my upstairs apartment and it wasn't that cold.
sounds like you have central a/c make sure your cooling unit meets or exceeds recommended out puts for your home sq. ft. then check where on the main air truck the upstairs is being fed (sides top bottom end) relocate as necessary to increase air flow.
insulation, blinds. ceiling fans. check dampers@ or near main truck
