How do I get my glass sliding door to track smoothly?
Question:I t's over twenty years old and it doesn't stay in the groove anymore and therefore gets stuck when I try to open it. WD-40 doesn't seem to help and I've cleaned the track.
Answers:
wd-40 is a wet lube. you may have to try a dry graphite lube. my guess is that you will probably have to try and replace the lower track and maybe replace the glide track under the door. some doors have little rollers under the doors to make them roll easy. if this is the case they maybe worn out. i get the feeling you have common sense and are a little on the handy side. so this is my recommendation. get a friend to help. take the door out by lifting it up and tipping the bottom towards you so you can take the door out and look at the bottom of it. if it looks badly warn, remove the other half. you may be able to change parts, if not you are limited to few options. you might be able to buy new parts if you know the make of the door, you might be able replace the total door frame. if you have to go that far i strongly suggest you replace the aged and no longer efficient door with a hole new more efficient one. with the rising fuel and electric costs it should pay for its self. good luck.
try vegetable oil.
bar soap--shower soap like Ivory. Use the bar up and down the track and it works beautifully and won't stain like veg. oil.
WD-40. Works like a charm.
Can you replace the rollers on the bottom of the door? They wear out with age, (much like myself,) You don't want to use WD-40, it attracts dirt.
First clean the track well and use polish like pledge on the track.
Second as this seems as if you keep the track clean - you need to lift the door up and out of the track.
Carefully lay it down on its side and check the wheels on the bottom side of the door.
They tend to delveope flat spots and cause the doors to hop and skip - somethings hopping the track.
If they (wheels) look worn or do not turn freely go to the hardware store and buy replacements.
