Why are hummingbirds attracted to the color red?

Question:I have a red hummingbird feeder in my backyard, and the birds are attracted to it like crazy, and the only reason I can think of is because of its color. Why is that?

Answers:
Because the color shades they can see are green and red. And since most of their surroundings are green (trees) the red stands out to them.

Myth: Hummingbirds eat from only red flowers.
Fact: Yes, hummingbirds are attracted to red, but you need only to observe them for a short period to realize that they will eat from any color of nectar-producing flowers. http://www.birdwatchers.com/debtips.html...

Hummingbirds are most attracted to red, tubular flowers. But they also love any bright colored flowers like yellow, orange, pink. I have had them humming around white petunias in the spring.

It is not necessarily the color but they know they usually have a sweat treat for them.
