Do I have a gas leak??

Question:So I walked into my house yesterday after work and it smelled really bad like garbage in my kitchen/dining room/living room area. I had just cleaned the house the other day really well, so I assumed some food had gone bad I scoured the area and can't find the source of the smell. I'm worried this is a gas leak the smell is pretty even in all three rooms and has not lingered upstairs. Obviously you can't tell whether or not it's a gas leak without checking it out but does that sound like it could be a gas leak?

Answers:
YES.there is a strong possibility that it is a leak...
call your GAS COMPANY RIGHT NOW!
They will come and check it right away for free.

Natural gas has NO odor so the Gas Companies add something that makes it smell just for the type of situation you are describing...a possible leak.

DO NOT light anything, open all your doors and windows and get everyone out of the house until it's cleared by the Gas Company.NOW!

PLAN B: If it turns out NOT to be a gas leak (better safe than sorry) it could be an animal or rodent that had died under your house or perhaps even within your walls (rat, cat, snake, possum, etc)

Natural gas does not smell like rotting garbage to me. Therefore I suspect that you do not have a gas leak. You could call the gas company. They have gas detectors for finding leaks. They should be able to tell immediately if it is a gas leak. Until you have if confirmed I would make sure that you have no open flames including pilot lights in stoves, furnaces and water heaters.
yes. call your gas ompany NOW. They'll usualy come out for free to check for you.
Firstly be very, very careful one single spark from a refrigerator or similar device could be a really bad thing. Next thing is to vent the house by opening all doors and windows for at least 1/2 hour, as the gas is heavier than air it will settle to the lowest parts of the dwelling. Do not under any circumstances sleep there unless you have shut off the gas supply to the dwelling as you run the very real risk of asphyxiation. I would suggest your next move to be ringing the gas company and get some advise of how to proceed.
Yes, I agree with the others, that you should call your gas company.

In the meantime, while you are waiting for them to come out, take a small container and mix 1 part dish soap to 4 parts water. Using a small paint brush, paint some of the soap onto your pipes where there are joints. If it bubbles up, your pipes are leaking.
Call 911 and ask the Fire Department to respond. They have meters to detect the presence of gas (or rather the displacement of oxygen). They will respond faster than the Gas Company.

This can be very dangerous if it is Gas, so don't hesitate to call 911 immediately. The Fire Department will not mind responding, it is part of our job.
call transco gas they will come and sort it for you.
