Is there a standard for distance between joists for a rooftop deck?

Question:I just had one built and the planks bend when walking -
Distances between joists are 34 to 38 inches.

Answers:
It varies by local code and depends on the size and span of the joists and the nature of the decking material. IE: 2x6 joists would need to be alot closer together than 2X12s.

16" or 24" joist spacings are common. 5/4 inch decking feels spongy at joist spacings over 16". 2x decking spans 24" pretty well without feeling soft.

34 to 38 inches? You need to consult a building inspector in your community, and possibly an attorney. You have been ripped off.

Code pending. 16-24".
I agree, 16" to 24" on center. No more!
when putting in joist for a roof, joist are usually set at 24 inch centers. check code for your city. This might not be to safe if you plan on walking on the deck.
sixteen inches
