Why do you have to lie sand under patio stones?
Question:can I just dig down and put the patio stones down?
Answers:
Yes you can. But I doubt if you'll like the result.
Why?
1. Leveling (one trip = law suits anyone?)
2. Drainage (oh what a beautiful paved mud puddle!)
3. Movement ( Ground and everthing else moves summer to winter, hot to cold)
4. Plant growth reduction (i'm speculating on this one)
The sand is to stabilize the stones and level them on uneven ground.
Actually you do not have to place sand under your patio stone, that is if you do not care about your stones being stable or level. If neither of the aforementioned are a concern go one step further not dig or degrass either, heck you might as well just ignore all the steps. Good Luck
sand is for final leveling of the base, the gravel is for drainaged and stabalizing. Both will not compact as much as ordinary fill. As a result you will be preventing mud from oozing out between the tiles.
