How well can an Ant smell?


Question:Can they tell if there is food like a mile away or just a foot away? My girlfriend and I were wondering that because wherever we live in an apartment and where ever we put our cat's food Ant's always find a way to it. And yes we're in the process of getting rid of them!

Answers:
The ant does not have a nose so they do not pick up scent particles from the air like we do. They "smell" by touching things with their antennae. So to answer your question they cannot smell over any distance at all.
