How can I safely get rid of ants? (see details)?
Question:I need an effective method to get rid of these black ants in my yard. I need something that won't harm my 2 dogs but will kill the ants completely so they dont make a new "hill" again. thanks. oh and it is about 2 feet away from my house if that helps.

Boric Acid IS very harmful to pets. I have no clue where people get the info that it is harmless.
There is a product down here in Florida called Over and Out. It is a fire ant killer. This product has a chemical called Fipronil as the main ingredient. Used properly, it can be very effective. It claims that it will work for an entire year, but I have found it usually works for 3 to 6 months at a time.

Use boric acid. It is safe around children & pets but it great for getting rid of ants, roaches, silverfish, fleas...almost all insects. Here's something you can try.
Ingredients:
1 Tablespoon of Boric Acid, 1 tsp of Sugar, 4 oz water, Cotton Balls.
Mix Boric Acid and Sugar in a bowl. This can be poured over a cotton wad in a small dish or bottle cap. Keep this from drying out for continued effectiveness. Place Cotton balls in path of Ants.
Otherwise, place a circle of boric acid around the anthill (or maybe DOWN the anthill. I f you place a line around your house, the ants will not cross it.

Boric acid is a very effective way of getting rid of ants. But you'll have to find a way to keep your pets away from it. You can buy boric acid at just about any grocery store, home improvement center or nursery. You don't need to buy an expensive brand since boric acid is boric acid and regardless of brand, they are all the same. Pour about a table spoon of boric acid down the ant hole or around it and a day or so later your problem should be gone.
One of the Web sites below says corn flakes is an effective way to control ants. I've never heard of it, but it may be worth a try since they shouldn't hurt your dogs.
Spectracide makes some granules that you can sprinkle on the beds and they will take it to the queen. After she dies, you wont be having an ant problem for much longer. You can buy the stuff from WalMart. I have used this stuff myself, and it will work well!!
I was watching the news oneday and there was this kid that didnt want to kill ants. so, as a science project he came up with using baby powder. He just sprinkled it on them and they went away.I dont know if it works, but it worth a try...And its safe!
