Which way do I want my ceiling fan to turn in order to cool my house off?
Question:if you could also tell me the difference in what clock wise and counter clock wise does in forcing air around that would be helpful as well. thanks
Answers:
Counter clockwise in summer and clockwise in winter
you want it blowing down to cool and blowing up to help keep the room warm..simple..down to lower temp ...up to warm.
if you have central air it would depend on if your air blows out of the vent on the outer wall or towards the middle of the house. if the air comes out of the vents (supply vent) in the middle of the house, then you make the fan turn counter clock-wise. other than that i dont think it really matters.
It doesn't matter witch way the fan is turning but that it is turning. It will still cool your house off. clock wise is the way the clock handles are going around the clock. counter clock wise is the opposite.
cool air stays close to the floor ..so in summer you want the fan to lift the cool air to the ceiling and around the walls..the switch on the fan should be up to pull the air ...use the medium speed and you should feel the difference ..if you have air conditioning it will help to curb the cost of running it..
Look at the blades. The blades should be turning in the direction the lowest part of the blade is on. This lifts the cooler air and circulates it. In the winter, you want the fan to bring down the warmer air to help heat.
Larry S is absolutely correct.
Fans should blow down in summer, pull up in winter.
That way you get a cool breeze on you in summer, but not a chilling breeze in winter. Room air circulates either way. The morons that tell you that you want to blow the warm air down, and pull cold air up are WRONG. You will circulate the air either way, but won't cool off the warm air in winter, and pushing the cold air down, across the room and up the walls in summer works great.
Blow down in summer, draw up in winter.
