How do I get rid of an old refrigerator?

Question:Do I have to pay somebody to take out the freon or is there some envirnonmental group that might take the old refrigerator for free? Do I have to take the doors off?

Answers:
If the refrigerator is clean and in working order the Goodwill or Salvation Army will pick it up for free.

Otherwise, make the company you bought your new fridge from depose of it. Demand they do it for free.

try one of those stores that pick up junk..this is what i do,,,i put the things i don't want ,,by the curb alone side of the street and someone will just come along a take it.just be sure you don't leave out too long...it also depends on where you live.
If you have a truck you can take it to salvage yard and there is a chance they will weigh it, and turn the metal into a recycling place. If it weighs a lot, they will even cut you a check for the value of the metal.

If not, call the local garbage service and ask if they can pick it up. They may charge an extra amount to your bill though.
try buying a new refrigerator from conns or some type of store like that. When they deliver your new one they tow away your old one.
Look in your local classifieds for someone that hauls off junk cars. Chances are they are recycling them and will probably be willing to haul off your used appliances.

I hope this helps!
Your waste management provider may have a bulk pickup service, which may or may not be free.

In our town, twice a year we can put out anything for pickup for free.

To remove the door, remove the large hinge pin at the top of the door and lift it off.
Just take it to the dump
Most states or municipalities have laws which require you to take the doors off if you dispose of a fridge curbside or at a dump. This is to protect children from playing with it. I have never heard any laws about the freon in a fridge. In my city, you can call the garbage department to come and pick up bulky items for a small fee.
