China question? Anyone know?
Question:Whats the difference between bone china and regular china?
Answers:
Real bone china is made of 5% bone ash added to95%Kaolin(china Clay). It was first made in the West in imitation of Chinese Porcelain. Most china nowadays comes from China, and the processes are modern.Very old bone china and porcelain was hand made, and hand painted, and is very fragile. Hence why it is very expensive to buy. I suppose they still use Clay which is very abundant in China.
Other than the choice of color, there is no difference between the two types. Pickard manufactures an ivory color fine china using kaolins (or clays), feldspar and quartz as its major ingredients. Bone china also uses kaolins and feldspar as ingredients, but bone china uses ash from cattle bones or calcium phosphate as a substitute for quartz to achieve a stark white color.
