When I was made homeless in 2003, this was the situation: I don't think it's changed.
- You can register as homeless 28 days before the date you have to leave your house, you can't beforehand.
- You apply as homeless to the council you're already in [medway]; they have to "give you points" - put you higher up the waiting list - because you're homeless.
- If you apply to another council they don't give you extra points for being homeless, so you probably wouldn't get a house off them straight away.
- But you can apply to any area where you live, work or have "a connection" - family counts.
- You do get a lot of extra points for having kids.
If you get any problems, your local Citizens Advice Bureau is a good first stop.
You can but i think you would have a longer wait if you didn't live in the area...your best bet is to (if u can) move in with your parents-family in Swale then apply from that address..Good Luck
Amazing, how on earth have you managed to become a mother at the age of two
Only if you are an ethnic and if you register as homeless the council will stuff you in a hostel. The indigenous population are last in the queue now.
good luck, you have about a 6 year wait
Be prepared for the wait. I put my name on the housing list with my local council when I was 6 months pregnant...my little girl will be 3 next month and I'm still waiting. I was lucky, I was able to rent privately. The councils are a joke. (I'm a single parent too).
I guess your not an asylum seeker, in a minority group, of an Islamic extremist, so not much chance I'm afraid. As for being a single mother with two children, well there are so many single parents out there, that this wont help you. The local authorities will probably put you into temporary accommodation, but that's the best you can hope for in the foreseeable future.
I don't know what your council is like but where I live property is not in abundance however both of my sister in laws, have children. The last one when she got preganant with her first child she applied and got moved into temporary accomodation in a few weeks. The other one when she applied they housed her in a B+B until she had somewhere to go. I think everywhere is different, but you have to keep on their backs nagging.
get a letter from the landlady go down to the Civic centre see the homeless unit see what they recommend they are very good.
Medway housing association don't house with less than 2 children
but the homeless unit has homes from all associations in the area.
