Water usage: handwashing vs. dishwasher?

Question:I usually fill my dishwasher to full before running it, to save water and time... but my dishwasher runs for a long time. Longer than I imagine it would take me to hand wash the same amount of dishes. Does the water circulate or is it continuisly running? I'm just curious if handwashing would save water or waist it. Anyone know for sure?

Answers:
Dishwashers vary with model and age... newer machines use very little water, check your manual to get an accurate measure. My dishwasher, an 8-year-old GE, uses 6 gallons of water for a full-length regular cycle. Consider the amount of water you use to fill the sink and rinse every dish when handwashing... it can add up to over six gallons quickly!

The dishwasher circulates the water after it fills. It probably doesn't use as much water as filling your sink.

Having said that, you'd also have to take into account that you probably either pre-wash a lot of the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher, or you might have to re-wash them after they come out. (some dishwashers are notorious for collecting junk at the bottom that gets thrown back onto the dishes in the rinse cycle anyway)

SO .. might be a tossup. Depends on your dishwasher and your method of hand washing/rinsing.
id say you save more hand washing but the convenience of a dish washer makes life a wee bit easier.
the water circulates then empties then refills for the rinse. It may empty and refill a couple of times depending on which cycle you use. You should try it on the shortest cycle then if the dishes aren't clean go to the next longer cycle. I read that your dish washer uses less than hand washing because of the rinsing and pre rinsing of the dishes. I have a septic tank so i watch my water usage, i ran my portable dishwasher on the longest cycle and it used less than 2 sinks full of water, i would use more than that with the pre rinsing and washing and rinsing. If your dishwasher is newer or energy star your dishwasher running when full will use less water than doing them by hand.
Dishwasher uses less water. It recirculates the water. HOWEVER, it uses electricity to DRY the dishes unless you choose the EnergySaver setting.
Handwashing definitely saves money by using less water! It depends on how you handwash. But the real cost is in the electricity usage. Personally, I like to wash dishes; it gives me time to think, plan, pray, meditate, etc. To each, her own!
