Can anyone recommend a gardening book for beginners?

Question:

Answers:
There is a series of gardening books by D.G. Hessayon called the expert series (Lawn Expert, Flower Expert, Garden Expert etc.).They are really good for beginners or more experienced gardeners & explain all the basic things which some books assume you will already know. I have used & enjoyed them for years & can't fault them.

I love the insightfulness of the "Birds and Blooms" magazine if your interested in a subscription.
How to be a Gardener Alan Titchmarsh - he's about as good as you can get and is soo good at explaining things for novices.
Go to your local library and take a look. The librarian will be able to assist you.
Depends what type of gardening you are interested in!

If you really want to grow one particular type of plant more than any other you would be better off looking at one that covered your area of interest!

The RHS do a set of books for particular areas (e.g. Veg, shade gardens, annuals etc...) which you can find at most garden centres and online (Amazon) - they also do a yearbook - steps to be taking in the garden at the relevant time of year - very useful for beginners (and not so beginners actually!)
If you are looking for an introduction to gardening there are a wide range of books and ebooks available. However, it really depends on what aspect of gardening you are looking for. It might be worth taking a look at something like http://www.gardening-tips-for-beginners. as a start point.

Hope it helps

Take care

.Browse around Charity Shops for the old Readers Digest three book series of Complete Library of the Garden which goes through digging and then details all the plants and how to grow them Modern books tend to give you current trends. Once you have mastered getting the soil into condition the choice of plants and layout should reflect you and your family. Its fun, when shopping for plants, to give the family children a few pounds to select their own plants...its amazing how their choice will differ from yours. You shouldn't need to look at a plant label to tell you what it is .Its more satisfying to look at it and recall some pleasant family memory.
D G Hessayon books, you'll see them at most garden centres so you should be able to browse through one and see if you like the way it's set out. Very specific and to the point, simply tells you,.. what you need to know.
No. but I can invent one. It would need to be fairly big and have padded covers, then it would make an ideal pillow for me to use in my garden whilst I let the buzz of other peoples mowers send me to sleep.
Any of the Dr David Hessayen books on sale in garden centres are very good for beginners plus you can then buy specialist subject books from his collection when you have gained more confidence.
