A canning question. Making jelly.?
Question:Do we still have to boil the jars in this day and age with all the great soaps we have. Boiling does not sterilize a jar.
Answers:
The boiling of clean jars is to bring them up to temperature so when you add your jam / jelly etc., it is not cooled down too much before the heat processing. Something to do with stopping bacteria growth in the food I believe.. not to sterilize the jar.
Always willing to be corrected... !
YES
I run mine through the dishwasher at a high temp to clean them before use.
Although, I still do simmer the jars, lids, and rings before filling - to have them at the same (or close) temperature as the hot jelly I am pouring into them - to prevent the jars from breaking.
I would say yes, sorry...where you put the jelly in it will be hot and you don't want to break the jars...maybe some day they will think of something different...but not yet..
