Question:How do I stop a raccoon from getting into my garbage when I put it out? He always manages to tip it over and rummage through my trash. It makes a huge mess, how do I stop it?

He built walls around his garbage cans, with a top that youo can latch in three areas (tightly) so far no racoons have gotten in it, suprise too, well live on the honey island swamp in louisiana!
they make "bitter apple" spray to keep dogs from chewing on furniture and stuff in the house... try spraying the outside of the bags or the lid of the trashcan. you can get it for just a few bucks at any pet supply store. -good luck
I have raccons and they get into everything- the only solution that has worked is not putting it outside or locking the trashcan lid shut if you can - the bitter apple has never seemed to deter them - i've tried it- unless i have super racoons

First option, which is the most effective, don't put your garbage out until just before pick up time.
Second option, use an animal proof stationary garbage container. But that might not be an option if it isn't permitted in your neighbourhood. So...
Third option, use bungee cords. Unfortunately, a determined raccoon may learn to open these. Even if it can't, it can make a lot of noise knocking the container over. Also, the people doing pick up might not appreciate the bungee cords.

You must buy a trash can that has a lid that shuts tightenough that a raccoon cannot open. There may also be the option of locking trash cans of some type, wildlife proof trach cans. Try a hardware store first but there are numerous resources online for animal proof trash cans as well.
live trap and release it some where far away but they are preety dangerous and you should probably call a pro...good luck

Seriously, you can get a live trap with food in it. When you trap him, just take him to the wildlife shelter or somewhere that save for him and far away from you.
