Seeds. Apart from the obvious way of planting and germinating them - how do you tell if they are alive?

Question:

Answers:
BINGO...for answer refer to your question ;) There is but one way to verify viability (and it is the same way the seed companies do it...plant a test group).

UPDATE: All seeds should be properly dried and stored in paper (not plastic). Moisture invites rot.

You could break it open and see what it looks like inside the seed. If the inside is still damp and it just looks dormant then plant the rest. But if the inside looks dried out, check a few more and if they look dried out too, I would assume they all were. If you can crush a seed between your fingers and all you get is a puff of dust, assume I would assume it's dead.
