We used to wrap tin/metal around a part of the tree trunk, wide enough so they couldn't climb up or jump past. You have to do all the trees and ensure they can't jump onto the upper branches from any other structure though. So it may not work in your situation, if for example your house is beside the trees.
We also used to trap them and then release a few kilometres away. This did not work. When we suspected we were catching the same ones again, we started tagging them. Sure enough, they were finding their way home only to be caught again.
NB: This was in NZ where it is most definitely legal to capture and kill these pests.
Our family pit bull dog was rather effective in keeping opossums, raccoons, cats, dogs and pretty much any animal away from our garden. I'm sure he deterred people also. He was also a great family pet contrary to popular misconceptions.
I found this site during my travels on the web:
http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/biodive...
It has a few tips on managing possums and it's Australian specific as well.
Good luck!
I'd kill them. If they're on your property, they're your possums.
