A good sword should be both flexible and strong. The best swords I have ever seen were hand made by a man who sold them at renaissance festivals. He would demonstrate the quality of his blades by smashing bricks with them, standing on the blade and bending it as far as possible, then striking it against a commercially made 440 stainless steel sword like you find in all the catalogs.
