Old surveyor's tool with tripod?

Question:My husband found an old surveyor's tool with the tripod. It seems to be about 25 years old. It's one of those things you see workers using on the side of the road that looks like a camera. We are going to try to sell it in a yard sale on Saturday and I have no idea how much to charge. My husband wants to put $50 or even higher. I was thinking more like $15 or best offer. I would LOVE to get rid of this thing, so I don't want to over charge. But I also don't want to lose money on it. Is something like that worth money? How much should we charge for it?

Answers:
I could let you know more accurately what it's worth if I knew more information. They are usually very expensive. If your husband found it, it may have just been accidentally left by a survey crew. It may be a good idea to ask local surveyors if they have lost equipment recently. If this is an electronic device, it could be worth a lot. There may be a reward of more than $50. If you're unsuccessful finding the owner, you can write to the company that makes it and give them the serial number. These things can usually be traced back to the owners very easily. I wouldn't sell it yet. It may be considered to be stolen and you may get yourself into some trouble.

you can buy a laser 'dumpy' for 50 bucks new
probably not old enough to be antique and the new systms work on laser and g.p.s. so not worth a lot try looking in the yellow pages and find surveyors supply tell them what you have and they can probably identify and give you a value could be just a simple builders level or could be a theodolite which could be worth alot more
I just checked on e-bay to get a feel for what something like this would sell for there. The variety of different tools was astonishing. The prices varied from $55 to $2800 (asking $3400). Without knowing more about what you have it would be difficult to place a value on it. However, it appears that it is worth more than you expected. Perhaps a little further research could net you a lot more money. You may want to put it on e-bay or somewhere similar to maximize your price.

Good luck.
at least 100
Your husbands price is fair, and if you found it anything you get for it will be gravy. It didn't cost you anything.
