How do I get old mulch to break down faster?
Question:Last year I had 5 yards of black dyed mulch put down. The mulch was not good and had alot of mold and fungus throughout the year. I've managed to dig up the mulch that was still down and put it in a large pile near my shed. Is there any faster way to break down this old mulch that just keep watering it?
Answers:
Try covering it with black plastic so that the sun heats up the pile. Between the moisture and the heat it should break down faster.
add a little nitrogen fertilizer to it.. the bacteria that eats the wood fiber needs nitrogen as well. find something where the analysis is XX-0-0 (that's all nitrogen) blood meal might be easy to find and it's high in N. toss the fertilizer into the mulch and water well. Turn the pile over about every two weeksm then add more water.. that lets air into the pile and lets the bacteria and fungi break it down faster.
