Use the pellets. Sprays wash away but the pellets they eat and take back to their homes and it kills them. The little houses work too. I was having a huge ant problem and the pellets seemed to work for a long time.
If they are sugar ants, the Little baits work well, they carry it back to the hill and it kills them all. If they are grease ants it is chemical warfare time, get ant killer and spray everywhere you see them.
find out where they are coming from and put some dryer sheets down where they are entering, they keep the ants away, it works at my house.
The best way to stop ants from coming inside is with a product called Termidor. Unfortunately, only licensed pest control experts that have passed certain tests with B.A.S.F. are able to apply it. I would recommend calling a local pest control company. If you live in MIchigan you can go to my company http://www.zebrapest.com Zebra Pest Control LLC. Another option, once you determine the type of ant, is to use a perimerter treatment that you can get at the store (like ortho) with ant baits (gel and/or buttons and granule baits outside) that are for that type of ant. If the ants are carpenter ants (usually larger) they may be residing in wall voids of the home and if that's the case you may need to drill a small hole in the wall or remove electrical plates so you can apply a dust inside the void where a colony may be. I'm not sure what you can get at the store but I belive that seven dust may help. (we use tri-die) It's also important to keep the house as clean as possible to remove the food source for foraging ants.
stevetower is right. I use Terro for the sweet ants (kills the whole colony), and a spray ant and bug killer I use directly on the ant mounds for other species. You can buy both at Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot, etc.
I sprinkle ant powder across the door ways and pour hot water in any holes near the doors and it moves them on til next summer... draw a chalk line, ants wont cross a white line.
go find the uncles and then the aunts will go home with them
